To help end solitary confinement in New York, you can write to the governor, other state officials, and your state legislators, at the following addresses, urging them to institute immediate reforms, and to support the HALT Solitary Confinement Act. Consider including some of the following points in your letter:
a) Isolated confinement is inhumane and counterproductive;
b) There are far too many people in isolated confinement in New York, disproportionately people of color;
c) People are in isolation for far too long, regularly months, years, and even decades;
d) Even particularly vulnerable groups are subjected to isolated confinement.
Demand some of the following changes in your letter:
a) Fundamentally transform the response to people’s needs and problematic behaviors, from deprivation and isolation to additional support, programs, and therapy;
b) Stop placing people in isolated confinement!;
c) At a minimum, ensure no person is ever held in isolated confinement beyond 15 days;
d) Never place particularly vulnerable people in isolation for even one day, including the young, elderly, or pregnant, those with a disability or mental health need, or who identify as LGBTQI.
