MONTHLY TOGETHER TO END SOLITARY ACTIONS, Wednesday, August 23: Please join CAIC for the 26th month in a row as we recognize the 23+ hours a day people spend in solitary and push for #HALTsolitary.

  • NYC6 pm, Staten Island on the steps of Borough Hall, 10 Terrace Place, Staten Island (near the Staten Island Ferry exit). In collaboration with Move Forward Staten Island and with Senator Diane Savino joining us, we will hold a speak out to end the torture of solitary in NY. As this is CAIC’s first monthly action in Staten Island, we hope as many people as possible can join!
  • Long Island6:30 pm, in the Worship Room, UUCSR, 48 Shelter Rock Road, Manhasset, NY. After a vigil in the worship room we will go to the art gallery for a screening and discussion of 13th: A Conversation with Oprah Winfrey & Ava DuVernayDirections at
  • Ithaca:  5 pm, Vigil outside the Tompkins County Public Library,101 E. Green Street, in partnership with Amnesty International group 73 and the Ithaca Prisoner Justice Network.


  • CALL Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390 and tell him: “I am a New Yorker and I oppose solitary confinement. We need to end its use in NYS prisons and jails. You have the power to end this torture and make New York a leader in respecting the human rights of all people.”
  • CALL Assembly Speaker Heastie at 518-455-3791 and tell him: “I am a New Yorker and I oppose solitary confinement. We need to end its use in NYS prisons and jails. The Humane Alternatives to Long-Term (HALT) Solitary Confinement Act (A. 3080 / S. 4784) would end the torture of solitary and create more humane and effective alternatives. A majority of Assembly Members support the HALT Act. We need your leadership to move the bill forward.”

Communications CommitteeWednesday, August 9, 6 pm. Urban Justice Center, 40 Rector St., 9th Fl, NYC. We will be discussing how we can leverage media, social media, and various types of messaging and outreach to support CAIC’s strategies over the next six months or so. Everyone is welcome to attend, and everyone’s energy and ideas are important! No particular experience in this area and no huge time commitment are required.

SAVE THE DATES! September 13 – 17 and 21 – 24. CAIC, in collaboration with Solitary Watch and others, is sponsoring an exhibit at this year’s Photoville in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The exhibit, called Photo Requests from Solitary, features photos taken in response to requests by people in long-term solitary in New York’s state prisons.   • CAIC forum: CAIC is tentatively scheduled to carry out its workshop on the evening of Friday, September. 1 (potentially in Cold Spring, but possibly Beacon or Peekskill–details still TBD and will be passed on). Anyone interested in being there, let Victor and Scott know.
  • Launch of the MarchSaturday, August 26, morning, National Black Theater in Harlem, 2031 5th Ave between 125th/126th.
  • Albany Conclusion of the March: Wednesday, September 13, Albany. Anyone needing a ride there, let us know. AFJ folks are checking on whether there can be a CAIC speaker at the final event.
All participants are encouraged to bring HALT signs, banners, t-shirts, etc. to any parts of the March.
