January 30, 2024: The City Council voted to override the Mayor’s veto of Int 549A, making it the law of New York City and forever banning solitary confinement, in all forms, by all names, beyond four hours while promoting alternative forms of separation – without isolation – that are scientifically proven to reduce violence and better support people’s health and well-being. The #HALTsolitary Campaign brings together advocates, formerly incarcerated persons, family members of currently incarcerated people, concerned community members, lawyers, and individuals in the human rights, health, and faith communities throughout the state to #HALTsolitary confinement in New York's prisons and jails. We invite individuals and organizations to join the campaign's ongoing efforts.
