NYC Council Passes Int 549 to End Solitary Confinement

January 30, 2024:  The City Council voted to override the Mayor’s veto of Int 549A, making it the law of New York City and forever banning solitary confinement, in all forms, by all names, beyond four hours while promoting alternative forms of separation – without isolation – that are scientifically proven to reduce violence and better support people’s health and well-being. Letter Urging Implementation of HALT Solitary Law

Mental Health Alternatives to Solitary Confinement (MHASC) and the #HALTsolitary Confinement Campaign sent a letter to the state Office of Mental Health, urging OMH to take immediate steps to implement the HALT Solitary Confinement Law.
